SFU personal home pages… yes they are real!

SFU personal home pages… yes they are real!

SFUWebsiteWelcome to another addition of the EdMedia Monday drop in sessions.  , in which we are exploring personal web publications at SFU.  going back a ways to some old school techniques but ones that are still very much in play, personal webpages. SFU continues to support its legacy “~” home page service, where anyone with an SFU computing ID can publish (via FTP) to an SFU domain space of their very own. My personal page reads as http://www.sfu.ca/~jtoal/ which I have not updated since 2004!  Although the bells and whistles of these services may not compare to what our social media savvy brains are used to via todays standards , (Tumblr, WordPress, or SquareSpace,) we hope to show that there are many practical reasons to keep your SFU domain up to date, particularly if you  are interested your online presences and identity.

Getting setup

Before you can get started updating you SFU personal homepage, you will need a few tools, namely an FTP client and a text editor.  There are many to choose from we have selected the following for our demo today.

Install: Filezilla https://filezilla-project.org/
Install: Brackets http://brackets.io/

After you have installed those head over to our guest speakers page to download the working files you will need to set up your own page!
